Our Story

The gem of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Byington Vineyard & Winery sits on 95 mountainous acres surrounded by redwood forests with a view to the Monterey Bay. Byington produces award-winning Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other exciting varietals that highlight the diversity of Northern California.

Established in 1987, the winery is focused on growing and producing premium wines, farmed sustainably using biodynamic growing methods. Our high quality, small production wines come from our Estate vineyards: 8 acres of premium Byington Estate Pinot Noir in the Santa Cruz Mountains and 36 acres of ultra premium Tin Cross Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot from Alexander Valley. We purchase additional varietals from select vineyards for an expansive array of wines.

Phil’s passion for wine started as a teenager when he spent three years in the north of Italy. The central role that wine played on the Italian dinner table impressed Phil and demonstrated the cultural importance of winemaking. After majoring in Chemistry from Lewis and Clark College in 2012, he started his career in the industry in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Phil went on to hone his craft in cellars across the world, from South America to Europe with several stops in New Zealand and Australia. His practical experience is backed up by a 2019 Postgraduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology from Lincoln University in New Zealand. As Lead Winemaker, Phil works with Byington’s world-class vineyards to craft wines of distinctive elegance and grace.

Vince Robledo

In 2016, Certified Sommelier, Vince, joined Byington Vineyard & Winery as Director of Sales. Since then, Vince has worked closely with winemaker, Andrew Brenkwitz, to manage the quality, direction, and style of the wines with the goal of drawing the fullest expression of each varietal. Together, Vince and Andrew have also created several blends, which have received high praise. This dynamic duo have continued to elevate Byington’s status as one of the leading wineries in both the Santa Cruz Mountains and Alexander Valley AVA.

Community Involvement

Byington supports hundreds of non-profits requesting donations for their charity auctions. We issue more than 350 charity auction gift certificates from these non-profits every year for a wine tour and tasting for 10, a $250 value. We’ve continued this tradition that the Byingtons started since we purchased the winery 7 years ago. We have supported more than 2,500 charity events in 7 years. (For charities in our community close to our hearts personally, Byington has donated additionally. These tend to be school and education-focused). Anyone can learn more about this at our website. We welcome non-profits and volunteers helping them to make requests for their charity auctions as well.
